Beyond the classroom: A Book Journey of Vancouver’s emerging Designers
A Book of Visionary Student Design Projects is happening. From ideas in our studio to projects that matters for Vancouver’s creative interiors, this is a story of our idea journey to reality for our future.
Over the past three years of teaching Senior Project Research at LaSalle College Vancouver, I’ve had the privilege of mentoring incredibly talented interior design students—each bringing unique perspectives, deep empathy, and strong design thinking to the table.
I had the privilege of designing a research course, and teaching it at one of our prominent design and art college in Vancouver. The thesis projects weren’t just class assignments; they were bold explorations of real challenges we face in Vancouver and across British Columbia—affordability, aging infrastructure, environmental, inclusivity, cultural, economical, sociological, and more. These students dared to ask: What if design could do more? What if interior spaces could reshape how we live, work, and belong in this city?
As their instructor and research supervisor, I guided my student from their unique ideas grew into something much more—evidence based research, turned to a visions for a better city. Many students started with a rough idea—sometimes abstract, sometimes limited in scope from beginning . But it was my role to help them improve and enhance it to multi functional, unique project through constant guidance, critiques, and deep discussions, I encouraged them to push further—to think about functionality, flexibility, and multidimensionality. I challenged them to create fun, engaging, and multi-functional spaces that not only solved problems but also inspired joy and adaptability in daily life.
Today, I’m excited to announce that I’m curating a design book that will showcase the top 15 student projects developed under my guidance. This publication will serve not only as a celebration of student creativity but also as a collection of thoughtful, forward-looking ideas for Vancouver’s design future.
Before the book is released, I’ll be sharing a preview series right here on the blog—featuring project abstracts, visuals, and insights from both students and myself.
This project is also a way to protect and honour the intellectual property of these designers. All work is credited and copyrighted, reflecting the collaborative spirit of mentorship and learning.
Stay tuned as I begin unveiling these ideas—one by one—in a visual blog series that shines a light on what’s possible when emerging designers are given the tools, support, and trust to imagine boldly.
